This is the only time that the name of Robert Schumann appears in Gould’s musical biography—presumably at the insistence of Columbia. Was he also meant to record the Piano Quintet op. 44, which Leonard Bernstein plays on the B side…? Whatever the case, the session led to a full-blown rupture between Gould and the Juilliard Quartet.
