After Eaton’s Auditorium finally shut down in autumn 1980, Gould seemed to lose all interest in making recordings—until CBS producer Samuel H. Carter told him about the Sony PCM 1600, the first digital recording device. Gould immediately declared his willingness to launch a new project on short notice, even if it meant returning to the New York studio to make this recording of Haydn’s six late piano sonatas.
